When acoustics and fire safety become crucial to the experience
When the multi-purpose hall at LEGOLAND® Hotel & Conference was due for an upgrade, the starting point was clear: a large space with many guests, high levels of activity and acoustics that made it difficult to be in.
The result was a solution featuring Fog & Venø’s fire-retardant acoustic panels – where proven fire safety, acoustics and design go hand in hand.
Challenge
At LEGOLAND® Hotel & Conference, they had a multi-purpose hall with capacity for up to 700 guests – but also with acoustics that made it difficult for guests to spend time in the room, particularly during large events.
Noise and reverberation affected the experience to such an extent that it became difficult to hold conversations, and the room gained a poor reputation among guests.
“We had gained a poor reputation because people felt they couldn’t talk to one another when events were taking place,” explains Torben Christensen, Senior Hotel Facilities Manager.
The aim was therefore not only to improve the visual appearance, but also, to a large extent, to create a space where guests could be – and stay – without being affected by noise and reverberation.
At the same time, the project had fire safety requirements, with materials needing to meet current standards for spaces with large numbers of people.
Insight
In high-traffic spaces with large numbers of people, acoustics are crucial to the overall experience.
A noisy environment affects not only comfort but also how long guests wish to stay in the space.
At the same time, fire safety is a non-negotiable requirement.
In a room accommodating up to 700 people, it is not possible to introduce materials without a documented fire rating.
“It was important to us that we found a solution with the correct fire rating. We are not permitted to introduce flammable materials in significant quantities,” says Torben Christensen.
LEGOLAND® Hotel & Conference therefore needed a solution that could reconcile several considerations: improved acoustics, documented fire safety and a visual aesthetic that made the room more inviting.
Solution
The solution chosen was Fog & Venø’s fire-retardant acoustic panels, which were first trialled on a small scale by installing panels in a limited area.
The effect was immediately apparent and formed the basis for the decision to implement the solution throughout the entire room.
“We could feel the difference straight away, so we decided to go ahead with it,” explains Torben Christensen.
The panels meet fire class B-s1,d0 according to EU standards and simultaneously reduce noise and reverberation in high-activity rooms.
Furthermore, the panels’ design and the wood’s texture contribute to a warmer and more cohesive visual aesthetic, where function and aesthetics go hand in hand.
Today, the room feels markedly different. Reverberation has been reduced, conversations can take place without disruptive noise, and the guest experience has been enhanced.
“Many people notice both how it looks and how it feels to be here. The mere fact that we can stand and talk to each other without echoes says it all.”
A result you can feel
The project at LEGOLAND® Hotel & Conference is an example of how acoustics, design and fire safety can be combined into a single integrated solution.
When technical requirements are taken into account from the outset, it is possible to create spaces that both meet current standards and enhance the overall user experience.
At Fog & Venø, it is not just about meeting requirements – but about creating spaces where people want to spend time.
