Calm, rhythm, and fire safety in the same breath
When Scandic The Mayor in Aarhus underwent modernization, the goal was clear: to create a calm and inviting hotel atmosphere where design, comfort, and fire safety merge into one cohesive expression.
The result was a solution using Fog & Venø’s fire-retardant acoustic panels – developed to combine proven safety with a refined sense of detail.
Challenge
Scandic The Mayor wanted to rethink the hotel’s common areas and create a calmer, more contemporary expression that matched the chain’s aesthetic standards while also improving the acoustics.
The hotel had previously used suspended 60×60 panels at one of their Copenhagen locations – a look they wished to recreate.
But this time, they wanted to take advantage of the full ceiling height and create a more open and harmonious space.
This placed high demands on the solution:
- The panels had to be mounted directly onto the ceiling with no visible suspension.
- They needed to improve acoustic comfort in an environment with high activity.
- And they had to meet the strict fire safety requirements for public buildings – without compromising aesthetics.
In short: Scandic The Mayor needed a solution where function, safety, and design could speak the same language.
Insight
In a hotel environment where many people gather and move throughout the day, acoustics play a crucial role in the overall experience. A restless soundscape affects the atmosphere, comfort, and sense of calm – all the things a modern hotel aims to offer its guests.
At the same time, fire safety is an essential parameter.
Materials used on ceilings and walls must be documented and certified according to the highest EU standards, and only very few products meet these requirements while still offering a visually elegant design.
Scandic The Mayor wanted a solution that could become an integrated part of the interior – not a technical necessity, but an active design element contributing to the spatial experience.
“We wanted to preserve the visual expression while creating a more open, calm space.
It was important to us that the design didn’t feel like a technical requirement, but a part of the overall experience,”
explains hotel director Marlene Kristensen.
Solution
The choice fell on Fog & Venø’s fire-retardant acoustic panels, which met all requirements – both technical and aesthetic.
The panels are classified B-s1,d0 according to EN 13823, meaning low smoke development, no burning droplets, and minimal flame spread.
They are also produced in Denmark from FSC®-certified wood and recycled materials, making them a sustainable choice without compromising on design or quality.
The panels were mounted directly onto the ceiling, creating a clean and uninterrupted visual expression – with no visible suspension – while highlighting the wood’s natural structure and warmth.
The sound-absorbing felt on the back reduces reverberation, allowing voices to settle and the space to feel more pleasant and balanced.
“We’ve noticed that people simply stay longer,” says Marlene Kristensen.
“There’s a sense of calm that invites you to sit with a coffee or open your laptop. Even when the space is busy, it still feels comfortable and well-balanced.”
The project was carried out by 2LP, who won the tender for the hotel.
“When we took over the project, an agreement had already been made with another supplier,” says Stefan Jakobsen, Head of Construction at 2LP.
“But because we required complete fire certification for both the panels and the construction, Fog & Venø were the only ones in Denmark who could deliver. That’s how the collaboration came about – and it has worked flawlessly from start to finish.”
The result is a ceiling that unites safety, acoustics, and aesthetics in one cohesive design.
A space where you feel the difference – not just see it.
A result with calm in every detail
The new ceilings at Scandic The Mayor are proof that technical requirements and aesthetic ambitions do not have to be opposites.
On the contrary, they can strengthen one another when the design is approached holistically from the very beginning.
For Fog & Venø, the solution is not just about delivering a product – but about creating materials that allow architecture and people to thrive side by side.
Scandic The Mayor demonstrates that fire safety can be beautiful – and that design can feel safe.
